A Typical Day

Middle School

A typical day for middle school starts at 8:50 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. On Elective Schedule days, it starts at 8:40. First class is a block class of literature and composition. Students are placed in classes appropriate to their reading levels.

We have a nutrition break after comp. Math is next. Math III covers the basics from fractions to decimals to percents to measurements to ratios. Some students will be in pre-algebra or algebra 1.

Students then go to U.S. history. This is followed by lunch.

After lunch is a social skills class with our school counselor. Students work on interpersonal skills, communication and conflict resolution. P.E. is next. Then students return to homeroom where we process the day. Homeroom gives us a chance to stay on top of work, get organized and solve any problems from the day. We also use homeroom to develop community and work on community service projects.
After school we have a study hall time to get extra help, 1-to-1 instruction and get homework done.

High School

High school starts at 8:00. (Except for seniors) We have We have physical science, history and civics. Then students go to their literature and composition classes which are on block schedules.

There is a short break for snack, then math. The classes range from applied math to trigonometry. P.E. runs across from the math classes. We have lunch, then economics, psychology and Passages.

Passages is a hands-on, experientially based program that allows students to pursue their interests, from career exploration to practical skills to global awareness. A student interested in cooking would research cooking, find a mentor, set up shadowing opportunities, then present to the class at the end of the project with a Power Point presentation.

Next is geography, world history, and Spanish. This is followed by homerooms. After school is the study hall period for those students needing more help or time to finish homework.

Seniors are exempt from 1st period and also have off-campus lunch privileges. At the end of the day they have college counseling. Our college counselor sets up their college search including preparing for the ACT & SAT.

In the fall there is a three-day overnighter to Yosemite. The spring includes an international trip that coincides with the spring recess.
