Sterne School is a nationally recognized independent co-ed day school. We serve a wide range of students who’ve been indentified with learning differences and varied learning styles. We know that when students are taught they way they prefer to learn, they achieve success and can realize their academic and life goals.

Students come to Sterne with a wide range of learning profiles and learning styles including dyslexia, attention deficit disorder, (ADD) and non-verbal learning differences (NVLD).

Dyslexia is a specific learning interference that is neurological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with reading, word attack, spelling, writing and sequencing. It affects males and females nearly equally, and people from different ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds as well. Approximately 15-20% of the population are affected. It is not a disease and there is not a cure. However, with a proper diagnosis, instruction, hard work and support, individuals who are dyslexic can succeed in school and as working adults.

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are brain based biological conditions characterized by short attention span, distractibility, organizational problems, difficulty with follow-through and poor internal supervision. Other learning problems occur in approximately 40% of people with ADD. ADD is found in every country where it has been studied and in about the same proportions. Many people never outgrow ADD and have symptoms that interfere with their whole lives. It is treated with stimulant medications including Adderall and Ritalin.

Non Verbal Learning Disorder is usually defined by a distinct pattern of specific strengths and difficulties. Individuals with NVLD usually have average to above average IQ, good rote verbal, expressive and receptive.
